Learn to Trust Writers
So, I don't know how many of you out there are in fandoms, but I am.
I am in a few - including one I have been fighting being in for some time. And this holds a certain level of responsibility. One that sometimes even I don't get. But this is one thing that I will cling to until my dying breath - YOU MUST TRUST THE WRITER TO DO THE RIGHT THING BY THE CHARACTERS.
Yes, I get it. I get that it can be VERY frustrating when you fall in love with a character and you start to think that you know them as well as family, sometimes even as well as you know yourself. But, thing is, you don't. Much like actual people, characters can respond in an unpredictable way.
This can be for many reasons - change of heart, curse, poison, different writer - the list really does go on and on in this case. But, the fact still remains that the show has what is called a Show Bible and, in many case, the creator demands that writing staff stick to it.
Which is why, if the character isn't acting in a usual manner, there is a reason. And it might not be clear to you at the very instant it happens - this is what is known as setting up a story line. It might even include foreshadowing. Point is, just because YOU don't know what is happening to the character, you can trust deep down that the writer does.
Now, next part of this is - just because you consider it canon, doesn't mean it is.
You can sit and scream all day about character a being in love with character b and you are sure you can back this up because you have a few pictures you snapped of the screen at the right time, but if the writers don't say it's true, it's not.
Now. I will say right now that I root for a few character couples that writer's don't approve, but I realize that if it doesn't happen, it's not the end of the world. It's fun to joke that character a is in such hard love with character b that they can't see it and stuff, but at the end of the day, NO HATE.
What gets me is the amount of people calling themselves fans who constantly whine and cry about this very thing. And they never seem to be happy. I suppose it comes from some people not understanding how hard it is to create characters and then keep them true to themselves for a long time. I mean, if you don't do the thing, how can you understand that thing?
But I digress from my original plea.
PLEASE LEARN TO TRUST WRITERS.
Because, honestly, you screw around with them too much, make them unhappy, they can end your favorite character's life. That simple. Don't say you haven't been warned.
Cherish your favorite characters lives and learn to trust their creators.
This has been my Thinky-Thought.
